What to Expect & How to Prepare

The information on this page will help you know what to expect and how to prepare for your procedure. Please carefully follow these instructions, along with those provided by your physician:
Before Your Surgery:
- Do not eat or drink anything (including water) after midnight unless your physician instructs otherwise.
- Avoid smoking the evening before and do not drink alcohol within 24 hours of surgery.
- Talk to your physician about any daily medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements.
- Notify your physician of any change in your health (cold, fever, sore throat, rash, etc.) during the week before surgery.
- Bathe or shower the night before or morning of surgery.
- You may brush your teeth, but do not swallow water.
Day of Your Surgery:
- It is important that you arrive at your scheduled time.
- Bring your photo ID, insurance card, and any forms requested by your physician (pre-op orders, history and physical, labs, EKG).
- Bring all prescribed medications or a complete list with dosages and frequencies.
- Arrange for a responsible adult to wait at the facility during your surgery.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes.
- Leave all valuables at home, including jewelry and cash.
- Do not wear contact lenses or apply make-up, lotion, powder, or deodorant.
- Let our staff know about any special needs or questions you may have.
After Your Surgery:
- In case of a medical emergency, call 911.
- A responsible adult must drive you home and stay with you overnight. You will not be allowed to drive yourself.
- It's normal to feel dizzy after anesthesia. For 24 hours, do not drive, operate equipment, sign legal documents, drink alcohol, or take any medications that are not prescribed or acknowledged by your physician.
- Follow your physician's post-operative instructions regarding diet, rest, activity, and medication. You'll receive written instructions before discharge.
- Notify your physician immediately if you notice any unusual symptoms or issues at the surgical site.
